Robert Wagner chose the actor Dick Powell's house to be used as the facade of Hart's house.
The Hart's house has the same street number as the real house's address. "Dick Powell once lived on the 3100 Block of Mandeville Canyon Road - and a location scout reports that the exterior of his house was used as the house in 'Hart to Hart'. It is not, however, visible from the street" 1. (Thanks to Amy for the quote.)
What is interesting about the Dick Powell connection is that he was once married to the actress June Allyson, who played Max's pen-pal Elizabeth in the episode Always, Elizabeth. .

The photos below show the exterior of the real house. They show a different view of the house than usually seen in the series, as you can see detail of the window loft area. This area was never used in the series or the movies.

Different views of the house: size of the house
The house is usually photographed from an angle where it seems to only be as long as four pillars across- see below. However, the house is much larger than it appears.
Now and then, there is a glimpse of it being bigger than this - see photos below.

The pool and gardens are to the left around the back of the house, and part of the garage area can be seen to the far right.
This photo shows the garage and other buidlings (guest house?) on the drive to the house, before the house proper.
